Yes, go buy volume 12 when it comes out! The reason? I had already explained in last month’s manga chapter entry.
On another note, since there are like 40+ pages per chapter, I think I should limit the number of pictures to less than 20.
A nice cover of this month’s issue of 別冊少年マガジン. The remaining “good guys” of top 10, plus Armin and Ymir.
**NOTE** this chapter does contain graphic content (especially concerning character(s)’ death)
(Mr. K.) Panels count: 14+
Synopsis of chapter: Smiley titan approaches the im- mobilized Eren and Mikasa. Hanne comes to fight the titan/buy them some time. Jean and Armin attempts to assist Eren/Mikasa/Hannes, but Jean's knocked out by a titan projectile. Eren awakens an ability, and commands the mindless titans to attack the "enemies". Retreat mode.Armin had shined last chapter. In this chapter, Jean’s been giving the cues (to Armin). Does this say something about his ability to make quick decisions in tight times? I am glad Isayama hasn’t forgotten this trait of Jean’s. For a limited 45 pages, not all fighting scenes can be fitted it. Maybe (and very likely I hope) when this chapter’s been adapted into anime, additional fighting scenes will be included. I am sure the gang have at least killed some titans during all this chaos. Not a lot of people left alive? Or maybe, they just can’t all be shown in one manga panel. He said something important, “Other can replace me if I am dead”. I wonder who…(Erwin made it out alive, btw) The blame game? Well here’s a candidates list: 1. Reiner, for hauling titans; 2. Armin, for provoking the shifters with a lie; 3. Mikasa, Jean was so focused on saving her (along with Eren) who are immobilized. A number of people had mistaken this as Jean – the fact this panel’s placed right after the “shocked Jean” panel. – Normally, it’d be Jean who’s protecting Armin. But now he’s been knocked unconscious, it’s up to Armin to do the defending.
– so in C49, some people might have thought how it was unrealistic for the main casts to not sustain any injuries with all those titans being hurled by Reiner. Well well, in this chapter, Isayama uses his “godson” to disprove of that (actually he did also use Eren and Mikasa for that in C49 as well). There are two camps to this scene’s interpretation. The obvious one: Mikasa professes her love (not as family), Eren acknowledges. The second one: Eren still thinks of it as “family” love. I like how Isayama handles this situation. Armin does not get a miracle boost of physical ability/strength. He is just doing his best to fend/scare off an approaching titan. They would have died, really. Armin has the brains, but hasn’t shown to be able to physically defend himself (let alone an injured person). He’s a good friend here by staying with Jean. (coz he could have continued riding his horse towards Eren/Mikasa) What a way to end a chapter and volume! Rest in peace, Mr. Hannes. You did your part. A new “X” will appear in volume 13 characters page.
ADD.: In a way, Reiner’s also killed Hannes indirectly. The titan he threw knocked out Jean. Jean and Armin were on their way to help Eren/Mikasa/Hannes.
A not so neutral review
The chapter is a good conclusion to a chapter, a volume, and possibly a story arc. What I get is that “the coordinate” is an object, rather than a person; and right now Eren holds that object. Could what Eren’s dad had injected be THAT object? If that’s true, it makes him a bio-weapon developer, I suppose?
It’s easy to overlook the Jean/Armin duo in this chapter – with the death(s), and the Eren/Mikasa-ness, and let’s not forget, Ymir/Historia. But as mentioned earlier, Jean’s been giving the orders – well, only to Armin, but still. I understand why he has to be knocked unconscious, because,
1. He’d be there to assist/save Hannes; 2. He’d be there to carry off Mikasa and Eren – then Eren wouldn’t have awaken that special ability; 3. He’d have seen the Eren/Mikasa chat scene (no time for distraction during a chaotic situation 😛 )
Oh, and he most likely won’t get a “thank you” or some sort from Mikasa either. She’s just so on to Eren, and has probably forgotten Jean had saved her life and then nearly died himself. Will there be a short timeskip in next chapter? Will it be some sort of characters (physical and mental) recovering chapter?. The wait is long.
The 4th BD/DVD volume will come out in ~10 days (16th) – new chimi- episodes.
Jean is one damn lucky “unlucky guy”, as proven once again in this chapter!
Someone wrote, “he should be fine. titans are only interested in humans, not any other living creatures, such as horses.”
