More proof anime staff loves Jean. Technically Eren is the main character in this episode, but Jean is probably the second/third lead. I am sure some will complain about having Jean again in this OAD episode. To that I’ll say, to hell with them. A story needs drama and conflict, and Jean is probably the perfect candidate for that.Summary: The class is divided into teams for a wilderness training exercise. During the night, Eren’s team (Eren, Armin, Jean, Marco, Connie, Sasha, Mina) are ambushed by thieves, and have all their gears taken, along with Crista. The team works together to carry out the mission. At a critical moment, Mikasa and Annie from the other team come to the rescue, all thanks to Armin fired a signal flare.
anything from the manga? None. All original content. Though what Marco says at the end sort of ties in to his conversation with Jean in chapter 18.First half of the episode – we are served with pre-Trost battle Jean. You’d think people who watch this will just hate Jean afterwards, but as with the previous OVD, he redeems himself in the second half. To be (un)fair, Eren was probably just as annoying in Jean’s perspective – to him, Eren speaks a full load of crap (of course that’s also vice versa for Eren).
I have no idea what happened there with Jean trying to run away. Was he gonna leave his teammates behind? Seems possible since this is the old-Jean. But from what happened in the second half, it’s also likely he will go and find back up; and/or think it’s a better idea than to just fight head on.
why is someone else getting the development?
I think both Eren and Jean received some character development in the episode – though because Jean was being such a jerk (in the MCs perspective) during the beginning, his change is more noticeable. (In a biased opinion) Eren was the hotheaded one throughout the episode, from the desert, to the dinner.
Side note: interesting how in this episode, of the seven people in Eren’s team, five of which was also in that scene in chapter 18.
I like how they tie in Marco’s assessment of Jean’s leadership trait in here. It wasn’t that obvious, but the second half of the episode did hint on this quality of Jean. It’s true that his sharp sense of survival instincts told him to flee from danger, but in the end, he values people. He was also the first to go after Eren to offer help. Would have been good if there’s some sort of conversation between those two after the whole ordeal – although Mikasa’s arrival probably killed that chance. But I think Marco’s talk to Eren will just do. What would Eren think, when those words (“Jean would be the better leader” ) came from someone he respects?
Overall a decent episode. I see they have more budget for the actual episode this time around because they didn’t do a modified OP. What we get is scenes of 3DMG action.
Jean asked Sasha, “You can cook?”. I am not sure if that was supposed to be “You can cook (that)?”, but this episode 3.75 takes place after 3.25. Shouldn’t Jean have known about Sasha’s cooking ability? Well good thing this isn’t the manga.
The narrator says, “our team” + “the one who kept the records was me” during the narration. So it confirmed the narrator is Armin. It could still mean someone other than Armin be reading a journal written by Armin. Keep in mind though, this isn’t the manga, so it’s at best anime-canon.
This will probably be the last time we’ll hear (literally) of the main cast of SnK because the next two OADs will be on the Levi spinoff “A choice with no regret” ; and we also know the sequel to the SnK anime is in pre-production. Maybe they can get some voice work done during those eight months.
