E3.75 (OAD3)

More proof anime staff loves Jean. Technically Eren is the main character in this episode, but Jean is probably the second/third lead. I am sure some will complain about having Jean again in this OAD episode. To that I’ll say, to hell with them. A story needs drama and conflict, and Jean is probably the perfect candidate for that.

Summary: The class is divided into teams for a wilderness training exercise. During the night, Eren’s team (Eren, Armin, Jean, Marco, Connie, Sasha, Mina) are ambushed by thieves, and have all their gears taken, along with Crista. The team works together to carry out the mission. At a critical moment, Mikasa and Annie from the other team come to the rescue, all thanks to Armin fired a signal flare.

anything from the manga? None. All original content. Though what Marco says at the end sort of ties in to his conversation with Jean in chapter 18.

First half of the episode – we are served with pre-Trost battle Jean. You’d think people who watch this will just hate Jean afterwards, but as with the previous OVD, he redeems himself in the second half. To be (un)fair, Eren was probably just as annoying in Jean’s perspective – to him, Eren speaks a full load of crap (of course that’s also vice versa for Eren).
I have no idea what happened there with Jean trying to run away. Was he gonna leave his teammates behind? Seems possible since this is the old-Jean. But from what happened in the second half, it’s also likely he will go and find back up; and/or think it’s a better idea than to just fight head on.

Jean has almost as much screentime in this episode as Eren; though Eren is the official MC.

Jean has almost as much screentime in this episode as Eren; though Eren is the official MC. Still being billed as second lead – as seen here with Armin and Mikasa being placed after Jean in the cast list.

why is someone else getting the development?
I think both Eren and Jean received some character development in the episode – though because Jean was being such a jerk (in the MCs perspective) during the beginning, his change is more noticeable. (In a biased opinion) Eren was the hotheaded one throughout the episode, from the desert, to the dinner.
c18-ov3Side note: interesting how in this episode, of the seven people in Eren’s team, five of which was also in that scene in chapter 18.
I like how they tie in Marco’s assessment of Jean’s leadership trait in here. It wasn’t that obvious, but the second half of the episode did hint on this quality of Jean. It’s true that his sharp sense of survival instincts told him to flee from danger, but in the end, he values people. He was also the first to go after Eren to offer help. Would have been good if there’s some sort of conversation between those two after the whole ordeal – although Mikasa’s arrival probably killed that chance. But I think Marco’s talk to Eren will just do. What would Eren think, when those words (“Jean would be the better leader” ) came from someone he respects?

Overall a decent episode. I see they have more budget for the actual episode this time around because they didn’t do a modified OP. What we get is scenes of 3DMG action.

oddities
ov3-00011Jean asked Sasha, “You can cook?”. I am not sure if that was supposed to be “You can cook (that)?”, but this episode 3.75 takes place after 3.25. Shouldn’t Jean have known about Sasha’s cooking ability? Well good thing this isn’t the manga.
ov3-00015The narrator says, “our team” + “the one who kept the records was me” during the narration. So it confirmed the narrator is Armin. It could still mean someone other than Armin be reading a journal written by Armin. Keep in mind though, this isn’t the manga, so it’s at best anime-canon.

This will probably be the last time we’ll hear (literally) of the main cast of SnK because the next two OADs will be on the Levi spinoff “A choice with no regret” ; and we also know the sequel to the SnK anime is in pre-production. Maybe they can get some voice work done during those eight months.

    Great read as always.
I really liked how Eren and Jean set aside their differences and teamed up, with Jean being the bigger man. And I notice this so much, but it’s almost always Eren being the hothead using violence while Jean uses words. I could imagine Jean being the poetic type, and having artistic abilities somewhere around that area. I can really see him being a person who knows how to use words.

      > Jean being the bigger man
Yes, that’s the words I was looking for. lol.. I have no idea why some keep on nitpicking on Jean being the “bad guy” in conflicts. Great that this episode didn’t break the tradition of Jean saying what’s true (him being honest even though sounding like a jerk).
      > who knows how to use words.
He does, probably too good at it though. (reason why hotheads like the old Eren would be riled up)

        Haha, Indeed.

Eren has always been known for his hotheadedness and his will/resolve getting in the way of his thinking at times, he’s impulsive, a bit like Connie.

I also think people like to forget how Eren murdered three people while the age 8-10. Makes you wonder how blind people are when they like Eren to the point they call Jean the asshole during fights. Jean probably doesn’t like using violence, and therefore he uses words to rile Eren up. But most people look through Eren’s PoV and not Jean’s.

Anyways, probably the best OVA so far, especially the part where Jean and Eren teams up along with Marco and Armin. That made me happy. Alot of goodies for Jean x Eren shippers as well.

Overall, great episode. Now we just need a Nile Dok and Erwin episode and we’ll be set :3

Hah…they say he’s an ahole whenever he’s in a quarrel. Then when he’s toned down his words and being the harmless guy who doesn’t want to kill they call him a wuss. I don’t get those people sometimes – probably the prefer typical shonen heroes. Jean doesn’t do hero, maybe that’s the reason.

I am glad we get to see more of their training years; as the manga didn’t spend much time on. Nice to see that Jean and Eren can work together – which shouldn’t be a surprise, because casting aside their (initial) goals, they do share some sort of similarities. I wish the manga will explore more on that (low possibility..).
I know pre-SL Jean is a much polarized character, but they managed to flesh out his good side in the episode. Good for them; whether the viewers see that or not, that’s their own problem.

RE Nile and Erwin ep: well we need to learn more about Nile (in the manga) before they can do an episode of that; too many unknowns right now. 😛

Nice work! And kudos for being so fast ( I still haven’t found subs) and informative !

After seeing this I really cannot fathom what were Marco’s strong points that landed him in the top 10. Connie is very nimble and fast, Sasha is … special in her unpredictable and instinctive way, Krista I guess was helped by Ymir but your biggest asset being a nice guy just doesn’t cut it. I thought Marco was the silent authority and the mediator of the group (something maybe displayed while in the Trost garrison) also that he must have had some crazy skills to surpass Connie and Sasha, but I am just not seeing it. His rating is a mystery to me. When he turns out to be a shifter I will just throw my hands up and say ‘I knew it’

One thing struck me as peculiar – I though the trainees were introduced to color-coded signal flares only after joining the Survey corps who used them as guidance for maneuvering and solidity of the formation when venturing outside walls (?)

I watched it without the subs, even though I don’t understand Japanese I can tell how the story progressed and what they were talking about. Marco is the team spirit, or the morale booster, if you ask me the top then always didn’t make sense to me, the Titan shifters all being together in a line up, I don’t think Annie should have gotten that high neither do I think Bertolt should have. Jean was the 2nd best at 3DMG so he should have been at 3rd, 4th or 5th. The top ten is like the story’s way of showing how things will turn out and who will stick together.

Marco probably was really good at combat besides 3DMG, for example we see his close combat skills briefly in episode 4 and his 3DMG movements briefly in Trost. I think Marco had a great will just like Eren which is why he got where was. Marco being a patriot and all, also giving faith to people like Eren and Jean when they needed it. I think he was the nice guy with the highest morale of them all besides Eren, this might also be why Eren looks up to Marco somewhat.

The last part I don’t know, but I know that the signal flares are used in all of the Military branches, it’s just more in use with the Survey Corps. We see Rico using one at three occasions. A yellow, a red and a green. If I’m not right then it’s anime-canon at best.

Marco is the glue in every team. In this episode, he’s the one who tries to pull the team together whenever there’s a scene. And because everyone seems to respect him, he’s the perfect guy to be in that role. He’s also likely one of the smart ones. All of that sort of makes him the everyman in the group – similar to Jean (but Jean’s physical skill is higher)

      >color-coded signal flares
Maybe that’s another bug? But I thought Armin was just randomly firing a flare without knowing what it means. It served its purpose by telling other teams that they’re there.
